Idler – In The Sweet Spot

PK Serves Up New First-Class, Value Cask for Devon’s Pubs

Idler aims to hit the sweet spot where quality combines with value – a beer expertly brewed with premium ingredients, but that still hits a sustainable price point that makes sense for everyone from us as producers, to you as venues, right through to the end drinker.

British beer has a long and illustrious history, as has John, our head brewer who started out brewing award-winning cask beers 16 years ago. While his talents and tastes have broadened considerably over time, in Idler we have bought together all of that history and experience to produce a contemporary take on the classic English bitter.

Idler is brewed using probably the two finest British hops – Bramling Cross and Jester – which, in combination, bring a relaxed bitterness and mellow fruity hoppiness. The malt bill holds a healthy addition of imported Belgian ‘Chateau Special B’ – our favourite malt – that brings raisin notes and a wonderful copper colouring.

So, be assured this isn’t a cheaply-made beer. Here at Powderkeg we hold strong views about the declining value of cask beer. We believe that cask, at its best, should be the pride of the pub – a hand-crafted, artisan, traditional, local and small-scale product.  All of which means it should absolutely be viewed as premium. Be assured, we have upheld all of these values in producing Idler.

But we have managed to find value in the recent duty changes that reduce the charge on beers up to 3.4% ABV. It is this change that has enabled us to make a great, sessionable English ale, brewed with a combination of the finest traditional and modern ingredients at such a reasonable price.

The flavour alone will mean this beer will always go down well with ale drinkers, but the lower ABV offers extra enticement for customers looking for lower alcohol or more sessionable options and makes perfect sense for destination pubs that have a clientele that often drives or that need a more moderate daytime/lunchtime offering.

And that’s not all! Not only are you getting top-grade beer, you’re also getting all of the other benefits of PK premium cask:

  • Gluten-free
  • Vegan
  • Rapid settling – Typically 2 – 4 hours
  • Perfect, consistent conditioning
  • Longer shelf-life on unopened casks – 8 weeks as standard
  • Devon-made
  • Premium brand

Times are tough all round, so a beer where we can make our margins, you can make yours and where there’s still the potential for a great, affordable offering for the end drinker makes perfect sense.

So don’t idle too long, pick up the phone or drop us an email and get pouring Idler.
