Our new nano-batch brew is out 22nd of October 2024, and while they’re all special, this is something brand new for us. It’s a real-life superhero.
A “Smash”, if you’re not aware, is a Single Malt And Single Hop beer. It’s what we do when we want a single hop to shine.
This one is called ‘Ernest’, an unassuming British Hop, bred in 1957, but rejected for being ‘Too Coarse and American”. History is full of idiots.
But the real treat here is that we brewed this beer with fresh, green hops. They were picked and packed, still wet off the bines, shipped overnight and added into the beer the following morning. That is as fresh as you can get and, honestly, the results are stunning. It also helped enormously that we somehow squeezed five kilos of flowers into just 60 litres of beer!
The result is a stunningly juicy IPA, so packed full of fruitiness you could suspect there are all sorts of ingredients and additives. But no – just one malt and one humble UK hop making one heck of a beer.
This a very rare opportunity, these beers can only be brewed once a year, and to be honest they’re completely unviable economically. We’re making about a tenner here, so this one is solely for the love of it.
We are sharing that love (somewhat reluctantly!), but there are only 60L in existence, so it is only going to a handful of our favourite independent Devon outlets, and their stocks are very limited indeed.
So, if you want to try some, these are the outlets – try and get there in the next week or so to avoid disappointment.
