FREE THE FUNK; ULTRA SMALL BATCH BREW
Our next beer in the ultra-small-batch Heart & Soul series is a Wild Porter called Free the Funk. Spontaneously fermented by the mysterious microflora of the East Devon countryside, nature did all the hard work on this one. The beer displays deep coffee and liquorice flavours, balanced against a nuanced and complex tartness that comes from freeing the funk over a low and slow six-month ageing process.
Lead brewer Josh loves wild beers and it has long been his ambition to brew one here at Powderkeg. Finally, he has his way! Josh thinks yeast deserves more love and attention, given all the amazing things it’s capable of when combined with simple wort and temperature control. Given the spectacular results, we’re all convinced he’s on to a winner, so look out for more of his wild experiments in the future.

What a delightfully convivial evening we had, celebrating 10 years since the inception of Powderkeg.
We settled in at one of our favourite spots, Tabac, with friends, customers and former employees all coming by to raise a pint or three.
Black Magik blackstrap stout was on tap specially for the occasion, but it didn’t last long! Rich with coffee and treacle notes it’s drinking superbly – and will be available in 750ml bottles soon.
Trail Blazer, Hang Time, Harmony, and a new pale called Kintsugi were also flowing through the evening.
Many pints were enjoyed and it was heartwarming to be reminded of all the supporters and friends we have made along the way.

Our Single Malt And Single Hop green hop IPA went down a storm on the weekend - the keg at the Pig & Pickle didn`t even make it to Saturday night!
We drank one at home with friends and it was bloomin lovely. The hoppiness is so mellow and soft but comes with bags of pineapple fruitness. Lush.

THIS WEEKEND ONLY!
Our new micro-batch brew is ultra limited, and fresh out for this weekend.
Hulk Smash is a green-hop IPA made with epic amounts of hops that were picked less than 24 hours before the brew.
There are just a handful of 750ml bottles of this, plus 2 mini-kegs on tap. It needs to be drunk as fresh as possible to appreciate the lush fruitiness.

SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) have launched this logo to help consumers identify genuinely independent beer.
Why? Because the big corporates have been `craft-washing`, which confuses consumers into thinking they`re supporting independent breweries when they`re not. Enough!

Look for this symbol on bottles and cans to know if it`s properly craft. It`s replacing the previous SIBA logo which looks more like a medal.
Tbh it will take a few months for everyone to use up their old labels and get this on there but keep your eyes peeled.
We are chuffed to announce that Cut Loose has won a Silver award at the Food Drink Devon awards!
Cut loose was the second beer we ever brewed and went on to win `Best Lager` at the IWSC Beer Awards in 2017.
It`s one of our favourite beers and inspires loyalty amongst our regulars, yet it rarely gets put on draught and we can never quite understand why. It`s got a nice punchy hop zest to it and is deliciously dry.
